Web design and development

Most business websites do not fail because they look wrong. They fail because they load slowly, read badly on a phone, bury the phone number, and give the visitor nothing obvious to do next. We build sites that fix those four things first, and look good doing it.

Web design

A website is a sales tool, not a brochure

Before anything is designed we agree what the site is for. Is it there to make the phone ring, to take enquiries, to sell, or to prove the business is real to somebody checking you out before a meeting? That answer changes the structure, the wording and the calls to action, and it is far cheaper to settle before the build than after it.

From there the work is unglamorous and effective. A page structure that matches how people actually search. Copy that says what you do in the first sentence. Contact details visible on every page. Forms that validate properly and tell you when they fail. Images sized so they do not cost your visitor half a second each. None of it is exotic — it is just done properly.

What you receive

Written down, not assumed

Everything below is part of the service rather than an upgrade, and each item is something you can hold us to.

  • A complete, responsive website built to the agreed page list
  • Unique page titles and meta descriptions throughout
  • Working enquiry forms with validation and a consent checkbox
  • Cookie notice and privacy policy in place
  • XML sitemap, robots file and redirects from your old URLs
  • A short written handover covering how to request changes

Why it matters

A website is a sales tool, not a brochure

Before anything is designed we agree what the site is for. Is it there to make the phone ring, to take enquiries, to sell, or to prove the business is real to somebody checking you out before a meeting? That answer changes the structure, the wording and the calls to action, and it is far cheaper to settle before the build than after it.

What's included

What web design covers

Structure and page planning

We map every page and what it has to achieve before a pixel is drawn, so the site is built once rather than rearranged three times.

Design that works on a phone first

Most visitors arrive on a phone. Layouts are designed at that size first and then opened out, not squeezed down from a desktop mockup.

Hand-written, standards-based code

No page-builder bloat and no plugin stack to maintain. Clean semantic HTML that browsers, screen readers and search engines can all read.

Speed and Core Web Vitals

Images optimised, fonts loaded properly, scripts kept to what is genuinely needed. Speed is designed in, not bolted on at the end.

Technical SEO foundations

Unique titles and descriptions on every page, descriptive alt text, clean URLs, a sitemap, and redirects from your old addresses so nothing is lost.

Accessibility and privacy

Keyboard navigation, visible focus, real colour contrast, a cookie notice and a consent checkbox on every form. The legal baseline, met properly.

How it runs

Four stages, agreed as we go

  1. Discovery

We agree what the site is for, who it is talking to, and what a good outcome looks like. You get a written page plan before anything is built.

  2. Content and design

Copy and layout are worked out together, page by page, so the design fits the words rather than the words being poured into a template.

  3. Build

The site is built from the approved plan, on a preview link you can look at from day one and comment on as it goes.

  4. Testing and launch

Checked on real phones and desktops, forms tested end to end, redirects put in place, then launched and monitored.

Questions

Web Design: common questions

How long does a website take?

It depends almost entirely on how quickly content and approvals come back. A small brochure site with the content ready typically runs to a few weeks. We agree the timescale in writing before starting, and the clock starts when the deposit and the last required piece of content are both in.

Do I need to supply the words and pictures?

You supply the facts — services, contact details, company details, anything you want to claim about the business. We can write the copy around them. Photographs of your own work and team always outperform stock imagery, so we will ask for them, but we can work without them.

Can I edit the site myself afterwards?

That depends on which build you choose. A static build is faster, cheaper and more secure, and text changes come through us. If you want to edit pages yourself, that is a content-managed build and it is quoted separately.

What happens to my existing site and its search rankings?

Your old addresses are mapped to the matching new pages with permanent redirects, so links and rankings carry across instead of dropping into a 404. That mapping is part of the build, not an extra.
